SOCAN
Protect Your Music

SOCAN is a copyright collective representing more than 80,000 Canadian music creators and publishers and, through our affiliated performing rights organizations (PROs), hundreds of thousands more worldwide. These are the people who create the music that's such an important part of our lives.

If you use music as part of your business or functions, you know that music sells: ideas, services, goods, and a host of other products. Music entertains bar and dance club patrons, your employees, your customers and even people waiting on hold when they call your business on the telephone.

In order to use music as part of your business, you usually need a performing rights licence. SOCAN will grant such a licence, allowing you access to virtually the world's entire repertoire of copyright-protected music for communication and public performance, at rates approved by the Copyright Board of Canada. A SOCAN performing rights licence ensures that the music and the rights of those who create and publish it are respected.

Generally speaking, there are a few main categories of music user industries:

  • Telecommunications (radio, television, cinema, internet)
  • Hospitality (bars, restaurants, dance clubs, private clubs, hotels, karaoke clubs)
  • Retail (stores, shopping malls)
  • Recreation (game halls, fitness facilities, private clubs, sports arenas, bowling alleys, sports clubs)
  • Concert (live bands or recorded music)
  • Workplace (in offices, service establishments, on hold on the telephone)

If you use music in public, you may need to obtain a SOCAN licence and pay the appropriate tariff(s) as set by the Copyright Board.

VIDEOFACT
Need Funding For Your Video?

A Foundation To Assist Canadian Talent, was created in 1984 concurrent with the launch of MuchMusic, which committed a percentage of its gross annual revenues to stimulate the production of new Canadian music videos. Two years later, when MusiquePlus went on the air, it also became a sponsor, as did MuchMoreMusic when it launched in 1998. The launch of MuchMoreMusic also marked the creation of PromoFACT, an Electronic Press Kit and website production fund for Canadian artists, independent record labels and artist management companies.

VideoFACT is funded entirely by MuchMusic, MuchMoreMusic and MusiquePlus. For VideoFACT's 2006-2007 fiscal year, the three stations will contribute more than $5.3 million to the foundation. To date, VideoFACT has allocated $43.9 million to more than 4,000 music video, website and EPK projects.

VideoFACT considers applications requesting co-financing for music videos, websites and EPKs (the latter through MuchMoreMusic's PromoFACT award program) six times a year. Applications are judged by a nine-person board of directors, and successful applicants receive non-recoupable awards of up to 50 percent of production costs to a maximum of $25,000 for music videos and a maximum of $3,500 for websites and EPKs.

Board Of Directors

The VideoFACT board of directors makes its awards based on the creative presentation and financial requirements. To apply for funding from VideoFACT or PromoFACT, please proceed to the Apply Online section or download the application forms available on this site as PDF files.

The Directors and Officers of VideoFACT are:

FACTOR
The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent On Recordings

FACTOR, The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings, was founded in 1982 by CHUM Limited, Moffat Communications and Rogers Broadcasting Limited, in conjunction with the Canadian Independent Record Producers Association (CIRPA) and the Canadian Music Publishers Association (CMPA). Standard Broadcasting merged its Canadian Talent Library (CTL) development fund with FACTOR’s in 1985.

As a private non-profit organization, FACTOR is dedicated to providing assistance toward the growth and development of the Canadian independent recording industry. The foundation administers the voluntary contributions from sponsoring radio broadcasters as well as two components of the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Canada Music Fund to support the Canadian music industry. FACTOR has been managing federal funds since the inception of the Sound Recording Development Program in 1986 (now known as the Canada Music Fund Council).

Support is provided through various programs which all aid in the development of the industry. The funds assist Canadian recording artists and songwriters in having their material produced, their videos created and support for domestic and international touring and showcasing opportunities as well as providing support for Canadian record labels, distributors, recording studios, video production companies, producers, engineers, directors – all those facets of the infrastructure which must be in place in order for artists and Canadian labels to progress into the international arena.

FACTOR started out with an annual budget of $200,000 and is currently providing in excess of $14 million annually to support the Canadian music industry.

Canada has an abundance of talent competing nationally and internationally and FACTOR’s sponsors can be very proud that through their generous contributions they have made a difference in the careers of so many success stories.

The Canadian Music Marketplace

To foster a healthy and independent Canadian music scene, CIRPA continues to create and sustain opportunities in an ever-changing marketplace.

Marketing OpportunitiesCIRPA participates in national and regional industry events such as Toronto International Film Festival, the POLARIS Music Prize, Canadian Music Week, the Digital Music Summit and Pop Montreal. These events, which will showcase Canadian acts and reach out to international and national buyers, will be important parts of the domestic marketing calendar.

CIRPA is always on the lookout for new ways for our members to improve their business prospects and practices. We organize educational information sessions with experienced professionals from different fields. These are "not to missed sessions" for any of our members and their staff.

Copyright and RevenuesCopyright, licensing and royalty issues continue to be important as we move into the next wave of digital licensing both in Canada and abroad. The establishment of the IDLA in Canada and Merlin in the UK were important steps in creating independent licensing bodies for digital and other product. CIRPA has been involved as a facilitator in both projects.

Our foremost issue is the private copying levy with respect to DAR devices. While we agree that the levy cannot be used as a “shelter” for unauthorized P2P downloading, we do not agree with our friends at CRIA that it should be done away with as a result.

The financial stakes may be small for the major labels, but are substantial in the case of the independents. We will continue to work with CRIA to arrive at a compromise which may see them back off their position, but barring that, will maintain that the CPCC has the right to include DAR’s as part of the levy.

Cultural Industry PartnershipsCIRPA will also work diligently to maintain and develop strong relationships with our colleagues in other agencies and associations.

We’ve formed a working group of the CEO’s and ED’s of the MMF, CMPA, CIRPA and CRIA to discuss issues of mutual interest – and come to agreements on what we can accomplish together. We have planned meetings with SOCAN in the near future, and have had several discussions with the SAC concerning potential copyright payments at the ISP level, and other potential global methods of compensating creators for their works.

As our major funding agency, FACTOR continues to be a strong partner in achieving our goals. With increasing funds for the next few years, based on the CHUM and Standard transactions, there should be opportunities for “fundable” programs in which CIRPA members can participate.

The Producers Showcase Challenge

Approximately 300 people jammed into Downtown Kathy Brown's to witness New Industry Canada's, PRODUCER'S SHOWCASE CHALLENGE on NOV, 7TH. I told you all it was "GONNA BE ONE DOPE ASS EVENT, DON'T MISS IT!" I Told You! And it was.

The Performances

Bizz from crackhouse radio and livetheculture.com exclaimed, "Rich Kidd's performance... he crushed it!" "Point Blank was the most jovial and outgoing I've ever seen...I finally got a Point Blank t-shirt."

Yes the performances were incredible that night.

New Industry's, Rugged One: Strik9 & Flex set the whole vibe of the show by opening the event with high energy and positive records, Rich Kidd & Junia-T did they thing for sure, letting Londoner's know whats happening out in T-dot.

Judge, Mic Boogie: I was impressed alot by Rich Kidd. Didn't know he rapped. He was live. Got the crowd into it for sure.

Top indie group,
Point Blank put on a solid performance as always and showed what they can do as a top Indie group in Canada. "They did like 6 songs," says Bizz, "including their singles!"

Okay, now for the main course.

The Producer Battles

Boogie: As far as the beats go. All the producers brought some dope beats. Some had more consistent production as they got into further rounds
...biggest surprise was Neenah. The only female in the whole contest.
Her first round beat was insane. It was probably the grimiest beat I heard all night. And she don't look like she makes beats like that. I had to spit a verse on it.
Rugged One: Our judges panel consisting of Mic Boogie, (T-dot's choice producer and now rapper) Rich Kidd, (champion rapper) D-Sisive and Londoner (and one of Canada's new favourite and respected rapper)
Shad K.

Some of the highlight battles were the surprising first round outcome where C4 knocked out Vokab... and that was only the beginning for this explosive producer who took out Vokab without a single...sample.

Big Pops vs Memorecks was another memorable first rounder.

Boogie: ...Pops, from the first round he was just banger after banger.
Some guy rushed the stage and fell down (lol).

C4 was definitely very consistent from round to round. His beats were all dope. Nice heavy low end in his beats. I'm definitely going to work with him.

Those two matches set the tone for the night.

C4 went on to battle , Neenah.
C4: ...next round was against Neenah. I knew that was going to be tough. For one, she's Vokab's girl so I knew she was going to try to take me out (like, you cant beat my man and me too).
So I dropped something different; that I felt would get people hyped....Next was J Staffz.

I asked judge Mic Boogie if he found the judges differ in scores; "or where you all pretty much in agreement during most battles?"

Boogie: We all had our own preference as for production style.

Any closely "scored" battles?

Boogie: Yeah, Big Pops and Black Ghost to go to the finals

The Finals, C4 vs. Big Pops ... 3 rounds ding ding!

C4 felt the first round against Pops was ruined.

C4: The sound guy played my beat at low volume and restarted it 3 times; it played for a total of 5 mins. That's not the way you take people by surprise.

I think that Pops is great at what he does and I don't think he's responsible for what happened but I would like to see an uninterrupted final.

Boogie: As for C4, the only reason why he lost I would say was that Big Pops beats just had a bit more feeling and life in them. More emotion with how he chopped up his samples.
His beats were monsters...
all of them.

For the night each producer there seemed to have their own crews with them, but for sure Big Pops stole some peoples friends away.

The Event as a Whole

The Showcase was a great
success. The Producers came with some of the most incredible production and the crowd response was a testament to that. A good place for artist to meet up with talented producers." Ultimately Big Pops' thunderous production styles dictated the outcome and had him crowned the grand champion of the evening. But that in no way takes away from the caliber of beats we heard all night from all the competitors," said producer Rugged One.

Boogie:Yeah for sure a good way to connect. I made some connects...

Legion: you mentioned working with a few of these producers in the future, anything peeps s/b looking forward to hearing soon?

Boogie: Well Im waiting on some beats from C4. I hit up Black Ghost about a beat he had I want to do something with. AND Big Pops... I could do a whole album with him.

C4: There's a lot of talent out here and I look forward to making hits for as many people as I can. I work with Jd Era quite a bit..i've done some remixes for Elephant Man and Akon in Toronto. Funny thing is; my day job is making jingles for commercials. I do hip hop for the love.

Congratulations to Big Pops, all the contestants and performers and Rugged One for hosting and putting it all together with
